Dumpster Rental Fees Explained: Overage, Dry Runs and Extra Days

The most common complaint about dumpster rentals is a final bill that does not match the quote. Almost every surprise comes from the same short list of fees. Here is what each one means and what to ask.

Overweight (Overage)

Most rentals include a set number of tons. Weight above that is billed per ton. Heavy material such as concrete, brick, dirt and shingles reaches the limit fast, and a cubic yard of concrete can weigh around 2 tons.

  • Ask for the included tons for your size and the per-ton overage rate.
  • Ask whether you can see the landfill weight ticket.

Dry Run (Trip) Fee

A dry run happens when the truck arrives and cannot deliver or pick up. Common causes are a car in the way, a locked gate, an unplowed driveway and an overfilled container.

  • Ask what counts as a dry run and the exact amount.
  • Clear the drop spot before delivery and pickup.

Extra Days

Projects run long. Ask how many days are included and what each extra day costs, and whether you can extend by phone.

Permits

A container on a Buffalo street needs a right-of-way work permit. Ask who applies and who pays. See our permit guide.

Prohibited Items

Some companies charge extra for mattresses or appliances, and refuse electronics, tires and hazardous items. See what can’t go in a dumpster.

Fuel and Environmental Fees

Some companies bundle these into one flat price, and others add them later. Ask whether they are already in your total.

Cancellation and Billing

Ask about cancellation and reschedule terms, when you are billed and whether the final charge can change after pickup.

A Simple Test

If a company cannot tell you the all-in total, the included tons, the overage rate, the extra-day rate and the dry-run triggers before you book, keep shopping. Our home page has a checklist of questions to ask any dumpster company, and our cost guide shows published Buffalo prices.

How to Compare Two Quotes

ItemCompany ACompany B
All-in total

Overage per ton
Included days and extra-day rate

Fill in each column from what the company tells you, and compare totals once the same items are included.

How to Avoid Most Fees

  1. Choose the right size and tell the company what you are loading.
  2. Clear the drop spot on delivery and pickup days.
  3. Call for pickup before the rental period ends.
  4. Keep banned items out of the container.
  5. Get fees in writing, with numbers.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dry-run fee?

A dry run is when the truck arrives and cannot deliver or pick up: a car in the way, a locked gate, an unplowed driveway or an overfilled container. Many companies charge for it, so ask what triggers it and what it costs.

Can I see the landfill weight ticket?

You can ask. A weight ticket shows what the load actually weighed, which lets you check an overweight charge. Ask the company before you book whether it shares tickets.

What should I look for in the contract?

Look for specific amounts and triggers. Vague wording such as “or more” on a fee leaves room for disputes, so ask for a number in writing.
